Now that I’m a full-fledged adult with kids of my own, I often think back in awe and appreciation on all the special things my dad has done for me: writing rhyming poems on my sister’s and my brown-bag lunches in grade school; tutoring me in high school calculus (the guy’s got a Ph.D. in math—blows the mind); driving a U-Haul filled with my furniture 16 hours from Missouri to Manhattan; and now, serving as beloved Grampy to my sons and, through his actions, teaching me how to be a better parent…and person. He’s one of the most honest and ethical people I know, but also one of the most fun—he’s an electrical and computer engineering professor who wears Hawaiian shirts to business conferences and has a costume party every year on “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” He instilled in me the importance of open-mindedness, kindness, hard work, and not taking yourself too seriously—not to mention a love for the ’60s pop group Jay and the Americans (our father-daughter dance at my wedding was to their hit “Come a Little Bit Closer”).
